Kate Bohunnis

Hatched Alumni: 2018

Based in Tarntanya (Adelaide), Kate Bohunnis works in metal, mould-making, textiles, print and sound. Focusing on identity, gender and queer perspectives, Bohunnis’ installations connect material experimentation and its ability to communicate psychological states and behaviours. This material performativity is either enacted on its own, or posturing and interacting with another to create a new structural system or tenuous imbalance.

Bohunnis is a graduate from Flinders University with First Class Honours. The recent winner of the 2021 Ramsay Art Prize, Bohunnis has exhibited at the Art Gallery of South Australia, ACE Open, Firstdraft, BLINDSIDE, Praxis ARTSPACE, FELTspace, Sister Gallery, PICA and various group exhibitions throughout South Australia. Upcoming projects include a solo exhibition fill me up and make me useful at STATION Gallery, Melbourne, collaborative solo exhibition Mucosa with Kate Power at Outer Space, Brisbane and a solo exhibition at COMA in Sydney.

What does Hatched mean to you?’

Being selected for the 2018 Hatched and subsequent studio residency with PICA was a hugely formative moment in my emerging art career. Having just completed my Honours, I was eager to extend my engagement further than my immediate community, learning from a diverse range of voices and critical discussion. Exhibiting in Hatched alongside other local and interstate artists meant that I had the opportunity to partake in these important conversations and modes of learning, both personally and professionally. As my studio residency spanned over 7 weeks, I was able to observe and participate in PICA’s public programming and witness first-hand Hatched’s enthusiastic community engagement. My experience at PICA was a leading step in my professional practice and national engagement.
